The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) is delighted to announce activities aligned with the celebration of the 55th Anniversary of the Union slated for Gbarnga, Bong County.
For this year’s commemoration, the PUL is bring into line discussions on trafficking in persons and the draft LTA Regulation. Trafficking in Persons includes collecting children from the countryside under false pretense. Sometimes people posing to be well-off and dwelling in urban areas collect children from rural settlements promising to educate them. Some of the kids end up being victims to sexual harassments while selling on major streets in Monrovia. They never get to see school as was promised their parents. These children are exploited mainly through the use of violence, or coercion and forced to work long hours. Grownups are also trafficked and enslave with no way to escape. Exploitations like forced prostitution.
Additionally, the FM band in greater Monrovia is messy as stations are occasionally overlapping and making broadcast meaningless. There are more than 120 radio stations across the country. Proper checks were not executed when licenses were granted for the establishment of the radios in already in existence. It is only now that the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) with the help of Internews has drafted a FM Regulation. The regulation is seeking to place broadcasters in categories which will determine output and reach.
Therefore, the 2019 celebration of the Press Union of Liberia’s existence will host two mass forums with journalists from all backgrounds in Gbarnga. A secretariat made of representation from PUL, Internews and ALICOR will be charged to collate all the previous commits of number of engagements organized by the Press Union of Liberia, Association of Community Radios and Nimba Community Radio Association into a final communique’ which will be represented to the LTA as the journalism community in Liberia position.
