PUL CONDEMNS STRANGE NEWSPAPER

Officials and members of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) have condemned the appearance of a strange newspaper on the newsstand with the publisher, contact number and full address unknown.

The PUL in a statement issued in Monrovia Thursday said it has no information whatsoever on theTransformer Newspaper, neither are the publisher, managing editor, nor other editorial staffs known.

PUL President K. Abdullai Kamara told a mass meeting of the Union’s members Wednesday that though the Transformer has been published five times, the Union has not been able to trace the owners and any of its staff.

The PUL said it is unprofessional and troublesome for a media institution like the Transformer to operate in vacuum as the situation reminds many Liberian journalists and the public of similar paper, called theNationalist, which published a very divisive article in 2005 and disappeared.

The PUL calls on the public to be very careful in dealing with such fly-by-night media entities as they have the propensity to cause major chaos in society under the canopy of journalism, which would reflect on the entire media community.

The PUL is meanwhile encouraging media entities to regularize their statuses with the Union to put it is a better position in addressing challenges they face.

“There are media institutions not affiliated with the PUL, and we cannot encourage this,” the Union’s President Kamara said during the mass meeting. “There are papers on the stand that have no imprint and author; if you are not with us, we might never cooperate with you,” he warned.
