MONROVIA, March 20 (LINA) -The Country Representative of Action Aid-Liberia, Korto Williams, has challenged Liberian journalists to build their capacity for responsible and professional dissemination of information for socio-economic development.
Williams observed that building the capacity of journalists has a crucial role in analyzing issues that would shape the development drive, noting that journalists set the pace for public debate and action in the society.
The Action Aid official was speaking Friday when she served as keynote speaker at the opening of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) Annual Congress held on the theme: “Strengthening Media Accountability to Support Democracy and Development.”
The Congress is being held in the auditorium of the University of Liberia from March 20-21.
Williams stressed that journalists should be able to follow issues affecting society so that they would be addressed by those in authority or policy makers to help transform the economic growth and development of Liberia.
She noted that journalists’ reports are often on personality issues rather than developments relating to health, education, justice, gender equity, natural resource management and economic status of the country, which are major issues for the growth and development of any nation.
Williams also emphasized that journalists are key stakeholders in ensuring that peace and stability prevail to transform, rebuild and develop post-war Liberia.
